Surveying Lab
Using surveying techniques in the field

Stocker 037B

Surveying labs provide students with hands-on experience to supplement instruction in surveying courses. The introductory course, CE 210 Plane Surveying, exposes students to the fundamental land surveying measurement methods. Students gain familiarity with:

  • precision steel taping methods to perform horizontal measurements
  • traditional transits and digital theodolites to perform angular measurements
  • traditional and automatic levels for elevation measurements

In addition, students have opportunity to use total station equipment, which enables horizontal, vertical, and angular measurements to be made in one operation. CE 410 Applied Property Surveying is an advanced course emphasizing techniques from property surveying using total station equipment.

The surveying lab equipment is also used by students in other courses such as CE361 Transportation Engineering and CE491a Land Development, to obtain survey data for course projects.

Specialty equipment includes:

  • Digital level
  • Global Positioning System (GPS) for performing differential GPS surveys
