Dr. Zwahlen, who has served on the Ohio University faculty since 1971, is an established international leader in human factors engineering and traffic safety research. His published works include one monograph book, over 100 articles, over 20 research reports, and over 130 conference papers. He holds one patent.

Dr. Zwahlen's varied research interests include computer simulation, design of PC software packages, driver performance measurement, driver risk-taking, traffic safety, railroad crossing safety, visibility of pavement markings, visibility and legibility of traffic signs, visual performance and driver eye-scanning behavior, video display terminal operator eye-scanning behavior and performance, probability modeling, systems design, human factors engineering and ergonomics, industrial and product safety, and development of machine vision systems used in industrial or security applications.

He has also been a visiting professor and taught classes at the University of Berne, in Bern, Switzerland, the Engineering School (HTA-BE) in Berne, Switzerland, and conducted a number of technical workshops at various agencies and institutions.

Dr. Zwahlen has a mechanical undergraduate degree from the Institute of Technology of the State of Berne, Burgdorf, Switzerland (1962), a Master of Science degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio University (1968) and a Ph.D. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Ohio State University (1972). He has taught classes at Ohio University in the following areas: Human Factors in Aviation, Manufacturing Systems, Analytical Foundations of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Seminar on Occupational Safety and Heath, Digital Computer Simulation, Systems Design, Human-Machine Systems Engineering, Cognitive Engineering, Human-Machine Systems Engineering Design, Information in Human-Machine Systems Design, Advanced Problems in Human-Machine Systems, Individual Research Problems in Human-Machine Systems Engineering, Experimental Design, Fundamentals of Queueing Theory, Advanced Problems in Computer Applications, and Seminar in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Principal Investigator of over 25 Government- or Industry-funded research projects dealing with traffic safety and driver performance, visibility, risk-taking, and VDT operator performance.
