Dr. Stuart came to Ohio University in 1995 after completing his doctoral studies. His dissertation topic was Transport of Microorganisms in Soil and Groundwater Systems. Dr. Stuart holds a dual appointment in the Departments of Civil and Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Stuart's research addresses the reduction and treatment of acid mine drainage. Supported by state agencies and the private sector, projects led by Dr. Stuart are helping to solve adverse environmental impacts of acid mine drainage. He also is developing approaches for using bioremediation and pollution prevention strategies. Other research interests include bacterial movement in soils and the biological treatment of hazardous wastes. Dr. Stuart has collaborated on six journal articles and presented papers at six conferences in his area of interest.
