In addition to teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses in the environmental area, as well as undergraduate basic engineering courses, Dr. Mitchell has developed and presented workshops on water treatment, solid waste management, and erosion and sediment control. During her professional career she has conducted research on physical/chemical treatment of water and waste water, erosion and sediment control, wetlands, components of solid waste landfills, and application of probes from subsurface investigations. Dr. Mitchell has over forty publications. With its concentration of petroleum byproducts, metals, and other potentially hazardous materials, highway runoff poses a major problem for the environment. Dr. Mitchell is investigating the use of wetlands to mitigate highway runoff. She also studies real-time determination of soil moisture. Past research has included water and wastewater treatment, water management, landfill components, erosion and sediment control, and subsurface investigations via cone penetrometer technology. In 1987, Dr. Mitchell was selected to head Ohio University's newly established Center for Geotechnical and Environmental Research, now incorporated under the Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE). |
