The emerging field of environmental geotechnology combines various concepts from environmental and geotechnical engineering with other related fields to solve real-world problems. Dr. Masada's work in this area includes studies of underground pipeline structures, geosynthetic products such as geotextiles and geomembranes, and leachate collection system design.

Dr. Masada's other research interests include application of flowable fill (or CLSM), characterization of pavement materials, performance of shallow foundations, computer simulation of soil fabric structures, resilient modules of soils, multiaxial testing of soils, centrifuge modeling, and cone penetrometer testing. He is the co-author of ten journal papers, twelve conference proceeding papers, and five technical reports. Dr. Masada also spent three years as a civil and geo-environmental consulting engineer in Dayton, Ohio.
