Course and Degree Requirements

  1. Required Courses - In the Fall of 2001, the CE Department instituted a new required course curriculum to be used by all new students. View the New Curriculum Required Courses Flow Chart. The previous required course curriculum is being used by some current CE majors. View the Old Curriculum Required Courses Flow Chart.

  2. Freshman Courses - ET 280 and IT 121 must be taken during the freshman year.

  3. Chemistry- Note that Chem 151 and Chem 152 are required for all students.

  4. Computer Courses - C Programming is currently taught in ET 181 and ET 240. ET 181 is the prerequisite for CE 330.

  5. Design Credits and CE Electives - All Civil Engineering students are required to take at a minimum one senior capstone design course (CE 491A, CE 491B, CE 491C, or CE 491D) plus three CE electives. The three electives may include other senior capstone design courses. The CE electives are listed on the Department of Civil Engineering New Curriculum Elective Courses Flow Chart, which is for all new students; and the Old Curriculum Elective Courses Flow Chart, which is being used by some current CE majors. Design credits are shown within brackets. A minimum of seven (7) credits of design is required. CE 490 courses will be examined by the Department Curriculum Committee for assignment of appropriate design credit.

Students are individually responsible for making certain that degree requirements are met, courses are taken in proper sequence, and prerequisites are satisfied. (See information in the O.U. Undergraduate Catalog for details.) Please read especially the parts entitled "Guidelines and General Information," "The Russ College of Engineering and Technology," and "Courses of Instruction."

The Department of Civil Engineering New Curriculum Required Courses and Old Curriculum Required Courses and New Curriculum Elective Courses and Old Curriculum Elective Courses information, along with a list of acceptable Social Science and Humanities courses, are available. Please prepare your class schedules for registration carefully. Discuss your plans with your advisor when you pick up your DARS Report.


Degree Requirements

In addition to satisfying the specific curriculum requirements outlined above and earning a minimum of 36 quarter hours applicable toward your degree after entering the civil engineering program, students must also:

  • Have a 2.0 (C) average on all courses attempted that are applicable toward a degree.

  • Have a 2.0 (C) average on all courses attempted in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology that are applicable toward a degree.

  • Have a 2.0 (C) average on all courses attempted in the major area of study that are applicable toward a degree.

  • Successfully complete a course by the end of the third enrollment in that course. "Enrollment" includes classes in which WP (withdrawal passing) or WF (withdrawal failing) grades were earned.
