Established
in 1904, the Department of Civil
Engineering is one of seven degree-granting departments within the
Russ College of Engineering and
Technology at Ohio University. Graduates
obtain a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (B.S.C.E.). The undergraduate
program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET).
Ohio
University's Civil Engineering department consists of eleven
faculty members. Students have access to
state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories, as
well as opportunities to earn valuable experience in the field, aiding the
faculty in research for institutes such as the
Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the
Environment. |

All
full-time faculty in the department hold doctoral degrees and have practical
experience in their areas of expertise. Several serve as consultants to trade
associations, industry, and government agencies, and participate in various
professional organizations. The faculty members maintain regular office hours
to meet with students on an individual basis, and every student is assigned a
faculty advisor. While their primary concern is teaching, our faculty members
strive to remain at the forefront of their field.
Current
faculty research programs include the lead university position on the
Ohio Strategic Highway Research Program Specific
Pavement Studies Test Road. The position was awarded to the Department of
Civil Engineering at Ohio University based on its extensive instrumentation
experience with concrete and asphalt highways. Faculty
research in pavements and culverts/pipes is well known nationally. Other
areas of emphasis include the study of landfill components and hydraulics,
noise abatement, acid mine
runoff abatement, soil structure interaction, and erosion and sediment
control. In addition to projects with the Federal Highway Administration and
the Ohio Department of Transportation, other research has been supported by the
Environmental Protection Agency, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the
Federal Aviation Administration, and the private sector. These research
programs provide opportunities for undergraduates to gain work experience on
campus and serve as a basis for graduate research topics.
Besides its
full-time faculty members, the department often hosts visiting professors from
other universities, and experts from industry as guest speakers in
classes. |
